I started researching this job years before I ever answered the phone or put on my headset. I thought I was prepared, and I was ready to succeed. They warned me, though, that it would take years to feel competent as I walked through the door.
I had a miserable training experience. My confidence was chewed up and spit out. I’ll tell you why I had such a tough training experience… so that I could be a better trainer!
My goal is to help improve the experience of others entering this industry. Seasoned dispatchers need staffing to avoid burnout. New dispatchers need proper documentation and structured continuing education opportunities. Everyone needs clear expectations, most of all the trainees.
Dispatch can be a scary place. I hope to share some resources and insights to help improve the experience of incoming folks, and share some important information with everyone else in the process.
